Impactions occur when a tooth fails to erupt fully into its normal position in the mouth due to lack of space, abnormal angulation, or obstruction by other teeth, bone, or soft tissue. It is most commonly seen with wisdom teeth and sometimes canines. Impacted teeth may cause pain, swelling, infection, or remain asymptomatic and are often identified through dental X-rays.
When a tooth does not emerge within the normal age range, it may be impacted and require evaluation.
Impacted teeth can cause discomfort, swelling, or tenderness in the gums or jaw, often indicating infection or pressure.
An impacted tooth may push against nearby teeth, leading to misalignment, root resorption, or crowding.
X-rays showing a tooth trapped in bone or growing at an abnormal angle are a clear indication of impaction.
There are two primary approaches Impactions
The dentist or oral surgeon evaluates the impacted tooth using clinical examination and dental X-rays (such as panoramic radiographs) to determine its position, type of impaction, and the best course of treatment.
Depending on the case, the impacted tooth may be surgically extracted (common for wisdom teeth) or guided into place using orthodontic appliances (especially for canines). The procedure is usually done under local or general anaesthesia with proper post-operative care.
