Curettage is a dental procedure designed to remove infected or damaged tissue from the gums and surrounding areas of the teeth. It is commonly performed as part of periodontal treatment for individuals with gum disease (periodontitis). The main objective of curettage in dentistry is to eliminate inflamed or unhealthy tissue, helping to reduce gum inflammation and facilitate the healing process.
Curettage is often indicated when gum disease has progressed to moderate or severe stages, leading to deep gum pockets and inflamed tissue that need to be removed to help reduce infection and promote healing.
When a localized gum infection or abscess occurs, curettage helps remove infected tissue, reduce swelling, and prevent the spread of infection to surrounding areas.
In cases where deep gum pockets form, curettage can be used to remove diseased tissue and smooth the tooth surface, allowing gums to reattach and reducing the pocket depth.
If inflammation persists after standard deep cleaning (scaling and root planning), curettage may be recommended to remove remaining infected tissue and promote healing in the gums.
There are two primary approaches to Curettage
The procedure begins with the administration of local anesthesia to numb the area being treated. This ensures the patient is comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.
Using a curette (a small, spoon-shaped instrument), the dentist will gently scrape away the diseased or infected gum tissue, often around deep gum pockets. In some cases, scaling and root planning may be performed alongside curettage to remove plaque and tartar from the tooth surface.
