Stainless steel crowns (SSCs) are pre-made metal caps used in pediatric dentistry to restore primary teeth that are severely decayed, fractured, or have undergone pulp treatment. They cover the entire tooth, providing durable protection, maintaining tooth function, and preventing further decay. SSCs are strong, long-lasting, easy to place, and help maintain proper spacing for permanent teeth.
Stainless steel crowns are highly resistant to wear, fracture, and corrosion, making them ideal for active children with high chewing forces.
Compared to tooth-colored crowns, SSCs are more affordable and provide excellent value, especially for restoring primary teeth.
They require less technique sensitivity and chair time, making them suitable for young or uncooperative patients.
SSCs offer full coverage, protecting the tooth from further decay and reducing the risk of retreatment, unlike fillings or less durable crowns.
There are two primary approaches to crown procedure
The decayed or damaged portion of the tooth is removed, and the tooth is shaped by reducing its height and contour to fit the crown properly.
A properly sized stainless steel crown is selected, adjusted if needed, and then cemented onto the prepared tooth using dental cement to ensure a secure fit.
