Operculectomy is performed to remove the flap of gum tissue (operculum) that partially covers a tooth, usually a wisdom tooth, when it causes repeated pain, swelling, or infection. This tissue can trap food and bacteria, leading to a condition called pericoronitis. Removing it helps improve oral hygiene, reduce discomfort, and prevent further infections, especially when full tooth extraction is not immediately necessary.
Removing the gum flap helps eliminate trapped food and bacteria, reducing inflammation and recurring infections like pericoronitis.
With the operculum removed, the area becomes easier to clean, lowering the risk of further infection and gum disease.
Operculectomy is a quick, simple procedure usually done under local anesthesia with minimal discomfort and fast recovery.
It allows the wisdom tooth to remain in place if extraction is not immediately necessary, delaying or avoiding the need for more extensive surgery
There are two primary approaches to Operculectomy.
The dentist examines the affected area and administers local anesthesia to numb the gum tissue around the partially erupted tooth, ensuring a pain-free procedure.
Using a scalpel, electrosurgery, or laser, the gum flap (operculum) is carefully removed to expose the tooth and surrounding area. After the procedure, the site is cleaned, and the patient receives instructions for proper care to promote healing and prevent infection.
