Pulpectomy is done to save a primary (baby) tooth that has deep decay or infection in the pulp. It helps relieve pain, remove infection, and maintain the tooth's function for chewing and space maintenance until the permanent tooth erupts.
The dentist examines the tooth, takes X-rays to assess the extent of infection, and administers local anesthesia to numb the area.
An opening is made in the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals. All infected or dead pulp tissue is carefully removed.
The canals are cleaned, disinfected, and shaped using small instruments and antiseptic solutions to eliminate bacteria.
The cleaned canals are filled with a resorbable material suitable for baby teeth. The tooth is then restored, usually with a crown, to protect it and restore function.
Primary approach towards Pulpectomy
The entire procedure—pulp removal, cleaning, filling, and restoration—is completed in one appointment. It is preferred when the child is cooperative and infection is manageable.
Done over two or more visits, especially if there is severe infection or swelling. The first visit focuses on cleaning and infection control; the second visit completes the filling and restoration.
