A mucocele is a soft, fluid-filled swelling in the mouth caused by the rupture or blockage of a salivary gland duct, often due to trauma like lip biting. It commonly appears on the lower lip and may look bluish or clear. While usually painless, it can feel uncomfortable and may require surgical removal if it doesn’t heal on its own.
A mucocele that does not resolve on its own over time and remains for several weeks may need treatment.
When the mucocele repeatedly bursts and refills, indicating ongoing salivary duct blockage or trauma.
If the mucocele causes pain, irritation, or interferes with speaking, chewing, or swallowing.
A sudden growth in the size of the lesion may suggest complications and requires prompt evaluation.
There are two primary approaches to Mucocele
The dentist or oral surgeon examines the lesion's appearance, location, and history. In some cases, imaging or biopsy may be needed to confirm it's a mucocele and rule out other conditions.
If the mucocele is persistent or recurrent, it is removed using scalpel excision, laser surgery, or marsupialization under local anaesthesia. Proper removal helps prevent recurrence and ensures healing.
