Pulp capping is a procedure used to protect the tooth’s pulp when it is exposed or nearly exposed due to decay or injury. A medicated material is placed over the pulp to promote healing and preserve its vitality. It helps avoid more invasive treatments like root canals, especially in young permanent teeth.
Pulp capping is indicated when there is a minor exposure of the pulp caused by shallow decay removal or trauma. The exposure should be minimal and controlled, without excessive bleeding or contamination.
The pulp must be healthy and vital, showing no signs of irreversible inflammation or infection. This ensures the pulp can heal and respond positively to the treatment.
The procedure is most effective when performed soon after the pulp exposure, minimizing the risk of bacterial contamination and increasing the chances of pulp recovery.
The tooth should have sufficient structure remaining to allow a good seal with a permanent restoration, which is essential to protect the pulp and promote healing.
There are two primary approaches to Pulp Capping
Remove decay carefully to avoid further pulp injury. If the pulp is exposed or nearly exposed, clean the area gently to control bleeding and disinfect the site.
Place a protective medicated material (like calcium hydroxide or MTA) over the pulp, then seal the tooth with a permanent restoration to protect the pulp and promote healing.
