A frenectomy is recommended when a tight or thick frenulum interferes with normal oral functions. Conditions such as tongue-tie can limit tongue movement, affecting speech, breastfeeding, or swallowing, especially in infants. Lip-tie may also impact oral hygiene, contribute to gum recession, or hinder proper lip movement. Additionally, a prominent frenulum can cause a gap between the front teeth (diastema).
A tight lingual frenulum restricts tongue movement, affecting speech, swallowing, and breastfeeding in infants.
An upper lip frenulum that limits lip mobility, causing difficulties in feeding, speech, and maintaining oral hygiene.
A thick labial frenulum can create a gap between the upper front teeth, affecting dental alignment and appearance.
An abnormally attached frenulum can pull on the gum tissue, leading to recession, irritation, or difficulty with oral hygiene.
There are two primary approaches to Frenectomy
The dentist assesses the frenulum through clinical examination and, if needed, imaging. They evaluate how it affects functions like speech, feeding, or oral hygiene to decide if a frenectomy is necessary.
The frenulum is removed or released using a scalpel, laser, or electrosurgery under local anaesthesia. The procedure is quick, with minimal discomfort, and followed by post-operative care to ensure proper healing and function.
